Southern Sudanese Unicode keyboard layout
Version 2.1

Downloading the keyboard file

The Southern Sudanese keyboard layout is designed to use with Tavultesoft Keyman 6. The keyboard layout currently supports Nuer and Dinka. Additional languages will be added.

The Southern Sudanese keyboard layout is free to download and use. The keyboard layout requires the Keyman 6.0. Tavultesoft Keyman 6.0 is a commercial product. See Tavultesoft's registration page for further details.

The Southern Sudanese keyboard layout can be downloaded from http://www.openroad.net.au/languages/files/ssudan21.zip. Once you have downloaded the zip file, extract the file into a temporary directory. Then start up Keyman 6 and install the keyboard layout from the Keyman configuration screen.

Keyman 6.0 Documentation is available in PDF format at http://www.tavultesoft.com/keyman/downloads/keyman60.pdf

Windows 95/98/ME are based on older non-unicode legacy encodings. Keyman 6 will work on Windows 95/98/ME with some unicode aware programs. Windows NT4/2000/XP have much better Unicode support. It is important to read Tavultesoft's FAQ What applications and operating systems support Unicode?

Using the Southern Sudanese keyboard layout

The Southern Sudanese keyboard layout uses deadkey combinations to type the required diacritics. The deadkey is entered first, followed by the vowel the diacritic is placed above or below. The diaeresis is assigned to the “]” key, while the macron below is assigned to the “[” key. These keys are highlighted on the keyboard map below.

Extended latin characters are entered using a modifer key. The “\” key is used as the modifier key. The following table indicates how to type each extended Latin character:

Required
character
Modifier
key sequence
ɛ\e
Ɛ\E
ɣ\g
Ɣ\G
ŋ\n
Ŋ\N
ɔ\o
Ɔ\O

To place a diacritic above or below an extended Latin character, type the appropriate deadkey first, then type the required modifier key sequence.

Additional punctuation can be typed using a Right Alt key sequence, as indicated in the keyboard map below.

The keyboard layout has been designed to use with Microsoft's US English keyboard.

Changes from version 2.0 to 2.1:
Deafult output is based on Unicode Normalization Form C (NFC). It is now possible to output NFD, although NFD output using this keyboard layout is currently undocumented.
